2017 City of Monroe Property Tax Continuation Propositions on the November 18th Election Ballot
EARLY VOTING November 3rd thru 11th

It is election time once again, and Monroe residents will be making some very important decisions that will help shape the future of our city. The six renewals that the City of Monroe has on the November ballot are for the 10-year continuation of property taxes that Monroe residents have been paying for many years.

Mayor Jamie Mayo says, “Collectively, these six property taxes bring in just over $5 million dollars per year. That is almost 10% of our city’s annual general fund operating budget. Failure to pass these millages could result in the loss of jobs and important services – if we must cut $5M from our annual budget. So, you can see why the renewal of these taxes are so important. Remember, these renewals are for the continuation of property taxes that are residents already pay.”

Early voting is November 3rd thru 11th (except for November 10th). Election Day is Saturday, November 18th .

Prop #1: Civic Center Tax Continuation

Property Tax: 2.510 Mills

Facts: This measure will generate an estimated $1,046,096 annually, for the next 10 years. These funds are used for paying a part of the operating and maintaining of the Monroe Civic Center Complex, including the cost of repairs, improvements and additions.

FAILURE TO PASS PROPOSITION #1 WOULD MEAN THE LOSS OF MORE THAN $10.46 MILLION DOLLARS IN SUPPORT FOR THE CIVIC CENTER, OVER THE NEXT DECADE.

Prop #2: Zoo Tax Continuation

Property Tax: 2.510 Mills

Facts: This measure will generate an estimated $1,046,096 annually, for the next 10 years. These funds are used for paying, in part, the cost of operating and maintaining the Louisiana Purchase Gardens & Zoo, including the cost of repairs, improvements and additions.

FAILURE TO PASS PROPOSITION #2 WOULD MEAN THE LOSS OF MORE THAN $10.46 MILLION DOLLARS IN SUPPORT FOR THE ZOO, OVER THE NEXT DECADE.

Prop #3: Capital Improvements Tax Continuation

Property Tax: 3.27 Mills

Facts: This measure will generate an estimated $1,362,843 annually, for the next 10 years. These funds are used to make citywide capital improvements such as repairs, maintenance, and enhancements to existing and future infrastructure and facilities.

FAILURE TO PASS PROPOSITION #3 WOULD MEAN THE LOSS OF MORE THAN $13.62 MILLION DOLLARS IN SUPPORT FOR CITYWIDE CAPITAL IMPROVEMENTS, OVER THE NEXT DECADE.

Prop #4: Police Tax Continuation

Property Tax: 1.51 Mills

Prop #5: Fire Tax Continuation

Property Tax: 1.51 Mills

Facts: These two measures will generate a combined estimated total of $1,258,650 annually, for the next 10 years. These funds are used to support our Police and Fire Department efforts to purchase public safety equipment and vehicles. This is crucial for Monroe public safety efforts.

FAILURE TO PASS PROPOSITION #4 AND #5 WOULD MEAN THE LOSS OF MORE THAN $12.58 MILLION DOLLARS IN SUPPORT FOR OUR FIRE & POLICE DEPARTMENTS, OVER THE NEXT DECADE.

Prop #6: Airport Tax Continuation

Property Tax: 1.01 Mills

Facts: This measure will generate an estimated $420,939 annually, for the next 10 years. These funds are dedicated to the purpose of providing and making capital improvements at the Monroe Regional Airport, including providing matching funds for state and federal grants. This also includes paying off the bonds for our new airport terminal.

FAILURE TO PASS PROPOSITION #6 WOULD MEAN THE LOSS OF MORE THAN $4.2 MILLION DOLLARS FOR THE AIRPORT, OVER THE NEXT DECADE.
