City of Monroe Wins LMA Award for Connect Monroe Broadband Initiative
August 19, 2026
(MONROE, La.) – The City of Monroe has been recognized by the Louisiana Municipal Association for the Connect Monroe Broadband Initiative, the City’s community-driven effort to expand access to reliable, affordable high-speed internet.
The City received first place in the annual Community Achievement Awards Technology and Creativity category for municipalities with populations of 25,001 and over. The award was presented during the LMA Annual Convention held in Monroe at the beginning of August.
Launched in 2025, the Connect Monroe Broadband Initiative brought together residents, community partners and broadband experts to identify connectivity gaps and develop solutions for neighborhoods with the greatest need. The initiative focused not only on expanding infrastructure, but also on making internet access more affordable and helping residents build the digital skills needed to take advantage of that access.
The initiative led to a public private partnership with AT&T to expand fiber internet to homes and businesses throughout Monroe.
“Access to reliable, affordable internet is no longer a luxury. It is a necessity,” said Mayor Friday Ellis. “Connect Monroe is about making sure our residents and businesses have the tools they need to compete, grow and succeed. This partnership is an investment in our people and in the future of our city.”
The Louisiana Municipal Association’s Community Achievement Awards recognize municipal projects that demonstrate innovation and make a meaningful impact in their communities.
