City Attorney
The City Attorney is the head of the Legal Department and serves as chief legal advisor to the Mayor, City Council, and all City departments, boards, offices, and agencies. The City Attorney also represents the City in all legal proceedings. This office is comprised of two separate departments: civil and criminal. The city attorney does not provide legal advice to the general public.
The current City Attorney is Brandon W. Creekbaum. Prior to his appointment in 2023, he held the position of Assistant City Attorney for the City of Monroe. Mr. Creekbaum is an alumnus of Louisiana State University (B.S., Finance) and Tulane University School of Law (J.D., Civil Law).
Civil Division
The Civil Division of the Monroe City Attorney’s office provides legal services and advice on all civil matters affecting the city. This section is responsible for drafting and reviewing contracts, agreements, and other legal documents; providing legal opinions and advice to the Mayor, City Council, and city departments; representing the City in civil litigation, including defending lawsuits and pursuing claims on behalf of the City; assisting in the development of ordinances and resolutions to ensure they comply with local, state, and federal laws; handling public records requests; and ensuring compliance with open meetings laws.
Criminal Division
The Criminal Division prosecutes misdemeanor criminal offenses and traffic violations in Monroe City Court. The Criminal Division’s responsibilities include reviewing and prosecuting misdemeanor cases and ensuring that all prosecutions are conducted fairly and in accordance with the law.

Only the prosecutor can make this decision to drop charges. However, a victim may request that the charges be dropped by filling out a request form in the prosecutor’s office.
Continuances are rarely granted but each is treated on a case-to-case basis. If there is a valid excuse, the defendant must appear prior to their court date. At this time a joint motion to continue must be signed. You may also have your attorney file the appointment pleadings. Please do not call the day of your court date or the day before your court date and expect to get your court date continued.
