City of Monroe Nears Completion of Winter Storm Cleanup

March 13, 2026

(MONROE, LA) The City of Monroe is entering the final phase of debris removal from Winter Storm Fern and will not extend its contract with Southern Disaster Recovery (SDR). The City estimates that debris pickup is approximately 70 percent complete, with more than 33,000 tons of debris collected citywide.

Debris removal efforts will not end. The City will perform debris removal itself until the project is complete. The City’s decision is based on its operational capabilities and its responsibility to be a good steward of taxpayer funds.

“I’m proud of the teamwork between Southern Disaster Recovery and our Public Works crews in clearing debris from the winter ice storm. As we move into the final phase, we’re focused on finishing the cleanup efficiently while managing City resources responsibly,” said Mayor Friday Ellis. “Our goal is to make sure every dollar works as hard as our crews do.”

The City will continue monitoring debris removal progress as the remaining work is completed.
