Today, Monroe City Employees assembled 400 Hygiene Kits which were delivered to the Salvation Army of NELA and the Monroe City School System. The effort is our JANUARY 2019 CITY EMPLOYEE COMMUNITY BENEVOLENT ACT, and it was 100% funded with personal funds from our employees. The kits included personal hygiene items for that can be used by male and female adults and children. Our goal was to collect enough money to purchase 200 Kits. However, thanks to the generosity of our city employees, we collected $1,433 in less than two weeks, and purchased 400 kits with the help of the United Way of Northeast Louisiana. Mayor Jamie Mayo and Public Works Director Tom Janway were joined by Valisia Tisdale from the United Way of NELA as they presented 200 kits (each) to Captain Jerry Casey from the Salvation Army of NELA (to serve their clients, and share some of their kits with the WellSpring for their Homeless Veteran Outreach Program); and, to Monroe City School Superintendent Dr. Brent Vidrine and Monroe City School System Homeless Liaison Kay Sutherland. It is estimated that the Monroe City School System has at least 100 homeless students. Mayor Jamie Mayo comments, “We are #monroeproud of our employees for their unselfish concern for the well-being of others. Last year we did 14 benevolent acts, and we plan to do the same in 2019. It is our way of going above the call of duty to embrace our people, address our challenges, and celebrate our potential through powerful partnerships and teamwork!”
